Origin Article: Dune Genesis

“Dune Genesis,” by Frank Herbert, is a 1,500-word article in which he shares the origins of Dune. It was published in Omni magazine, the July 1980 issue, and included illustrations by John Schoenherr, the artist for various Dune saga book covers, as well as for The Illustrated Dune.

It is important for not only the details on Dune and its roots in environmental issues, but for Frank Herbert’s views on the nature of power, power structures, myth in society that allows “messiahs” to emerge, and the dangers therein.

Willis McNelly Interviews

Frank and Beverly Herbert

Frank and Beverly Herbert were interviewed by Professor Willis McNelly – the author of The Dune Encyclopedia – on February 3, 1969. The main subject was Frank’s first two novels in the Dune saga, Dune and Dune Messiah.

The transcript has been posted online. About 25 pages of material, it contains some particularly intriguing sections dealing with Frank’s views on power, and also on the religious constructs behind Paul Atreides as a messiah.

Analog Magazine 1965 Series: “Dune World”

“This is a story of men under pressure of politics

and the dehydration of a waterless world …”

So opens Part 1 of “Dune World” by Frank Herbert.

Before Chilton made book publishing history in 1965 by issuing Frank Herbert’s classic Dune, the sci-fi magazine Analog published his “Dune World.” This three-part serial put into print the first half of what became Dune. It appeared in Analog’s issues of December 1963, January 1964, and February 1964, with illustrations by John Schoenherr.

Analog serialized the second half as “The Prophet of Dune” in January, February, and March 1965.

John Schoenherr was also artist for The Illustrated Dune.
